Hyderabad: Doctors at the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) have treated four children who were suffering from Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC), a rare genetic condition.
With PFIC, the patients are not able to drain bile from the liver even though the large bile ducts are open, with this leading to liver damage and liver cancer. If PFIC disease is detected late, patient need to go for liver transplantation but if we detected early, procedures like PEBD (partial external biliary drainage) and Ileal Exclusion operations can be taken up.
Two both brothers – one 14 year old and another 16 years – residents of the Dhanavari Palem, Khammam had come to the OGH with complaint of Itching, jaundice, and growth retardation. Their parents who are poor labourers had taken the brothers to different hospitals where liver transplantation was advised as treatment option. OGH doctors on evalution of the patients found that liver was not cirrhotic, so they went for Ileal Exclusion surgery.
The other case of the rare genetic liver disorder was that of an year-old child from Karimnagar who came with full-blown liver cirrhosis. The doctors did living donor liver transplantation with the mother donating a portion of her liver to her child. The OGH team also treated a 8-year-old child who was brought in serious condition with blood vomitings, jaundice, coma, and shock.
