Hyderabad: The International GIS Day, celebrated on the third Wednesday of November every year, was organised at the Department of Geography, Osmania University. Jointly organised by the GeoMap Society & Department of Geography, it was attended by GeoSpatial professionals and students.
Dr N Satyanarayana, Commissioner and Director Municipal Administration (CDMA), who was the chief guest, said the Telangana government was using GIS in various sectors and Hyderabad, in particular, was recognised as a Geospatial Hub. He mentioned that the State leadership was keen on using GIS in sectors of urban development and municipal administration.
Prof B Srinagesh, HOD, Department of Geography and Prof A Balakishan and Dr Veeraiah spoke of the opportunities GIS offered and asked students to get more involved with domain knowledge of Geography and GIS.
Maj Gen R Siva Kumar, Veteran, former CEO, NSDI, DST, delivered the inaugural GeoSpatial Lecture – Celebrating GIS Kumar- “GIS Technologies – Contemporary Scenario & Emerging Opportunities” recognising the contribution of GS Kumar, founder of GeoMap Society and former Director Survey of India. He spoke of the challenges and opportunities in the GIS sector and highlighted the new GeoSpatial policy which would encourage GIS-based applications. He mentioned about the United Nations International Geospatial Congress was being organised at Hyderabad in October 2022, a press release said.
Maj Shiva Kiran expressed happiness that the GIS community of professionals and students got together for International GIS day.
Prizes were given for the essay competition on “Interdisciplinary Approaches and Applications in GIS (Geographic Information System) /Mapping”. Students from Osmania University, Hyderabad Public School, National Academy of Construction (NAC) participated in the programme.
