Sangareddy: Outsourcing workers of the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad staged a massive protest at the main entrance gate near NH-65 in Kandi on Monday, accusing the contractor of delaying payment of salaries.
As the contractor failed to pay salaries by the 10th of every month, the workers had taken up the issue with him on Saturday. However, when they returned to work on Monday, they were denied entry into the campus at the main gate.
Nearly 400 workers gathered at the entrance, raised slogans against the contractor and demanded justice. They sought a minimum salary of Rs.26,000 to be paid on the first of every month. They also demanded free medical treatment for workers at the IIT-H hospital, canteen facility, insurance cover of Rs.10 lakh and uniforms.
The workers alleged that whenever they raised issues, the contractor removed them from duty and recruited freshers. They further complained that the contractor pasted photographs of removed workers on the notice board, and accused him of hiring workers from other places instead of giving opportunities to locals.
A police team led by DSP Sataiah Goud reached the spot and facilitated talks between the management and workers. The management assured the workers of justice after discussions with the contractor. The protest caused tension on the IIT-H premises for a while. Later, the workers were allowed inside the campus and resumed duties.
