New Year crackdown: Over 2,700 booked for drunk driving across Hyderabad
Police booked 2,731 persons for drunken driving during special New Year’s eve checks across Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri. The drive was supervised by top officials to prevent accidents, with traffic police conducting checks at multiple locations

Hyderabad: A total of 2,731 persons were caught during drunken driving checks conducted in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri Commissionerates on New Year’s eve on Wednesday night.
The checks were supervised by Commissioners of Police of Cyberabad, Hyderabad and Malkajgiri with an aim to prevent any road accident in and around the city. Teams of traffic police armed with breath analyser kits conducted the checks at multiple places.
At a few places, those caught during the checking caused nuisance forcing the law and order police to intervene. Videos of those caught during the checking for driving in inebriated condition pleading with the police to let them go went viral. A few individuals tried to harm themselves after being caught for drunk driving.
In Hyderabad, the checking was conducted at 120 places by traffic police who were assisted by the Armed Reserve police platoons and local police. Hyderabad Police Commissioner, VC Sajjanar inspected the drunk driving checking in the city. A total of 1,198 persons were caught in Hyderabad.
Malkajgiri Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty supervised the drunk driving checking and a total of 605 persons were caught at various places.
Cyberabad Commissioner of Police M Ramesh monitored the entire drunk driving checking process from his office and on field on Wednesday night. The Cyberabad police caught 928 persons during the checking drive.
