Hyderabad: A total of 372 persons caught by the Cyberabad Traffic Police for drunk driving and without driving license in the last one week were sentenced to imprisonment for durations ranging from one day to 22 days with the court imposing a fine as well.

The Traffic Police had caught 861 persons for drunk driving and without driving licence during regular vehicle checking between July 26 and 30 at various places across the Commissionerate. Officials said all those caught were produced before court, which imposed a fine totalling to Rs 15.2 lakh on them.

According to the police, Miyapur stood in first place with 110 persons imprisoned for drunk driving, followed by Kukatpally with 109 persons, Balanagar with 40 persons, Gachibowli with 39 persons and Madhapur with 27 persons while Rajendranagar had 19 persons, Shadnagar had 17 and Shamshabad with 11 persons.

Officials said the driving license of all the persons caught drunk were being sent to the concerned Regional Transport Authority for suspension.

“Drunk driving and driving by unauthorized persons have been the major causes of road crashes and fatalities in Cyberabad. Hence, we have been taking stringent legal action against such violators,” said SM Vijay Kumar, DCP (Traffic) Cyberabad.

In view of increasing number of road accidents due to drunk driving, the Traffic Police have started strictly enforcing action against drunk drivers while following due Covid safety precautions, he added.

“It is noticed that many people are resorting to driving under the influence of alcohol without caring for the safety of themselves as well as the safety of other road users,” the DCP said.
The worrying part is that most of the drunk drivers are highly educated professionals in various fields who should be ideally following traffic rules in the city consciously, he added.

The persons who cause fatal accidents under drunken condition are being booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder as per section 304 part II of the Indian Penal Code which would result in the imprisonment of up to 10 years.

Also, the persons who knowingly allow or accompany the drunk drivers are also being prosecuted for abetting the crimes. The institutions or organisations they work for are also being intimated about the incident and being urged to conduct road safety education to their employees.
