Hyderabad: In just one week, the Rachakonda Traffic Police booked over 41,000 cases and imposed a fine of Rs.1.6 crore on traffic violators. The same period saw 66 accidents, in which eight persons lost their lives. Officials said human errors including negligent driving, over speed and drunk driving and road engineering were the causes.

As per traffic police data, during various special drives conducted across the city for violations and as part of regular enforcement, 41,841 Motor Vehicle Act cases were booked under various heads and a fine of Rs.1,68,48,850, was imposed between December 11 and 17.

To curb the menace of drunk driving, the traffic wing booked a total of 554 cases during the period. The violators were counseled by the Traffic Training Institute staff in the presence of their family members. A total of 242 persons were produced before court, which imposed a fine of over Rs.6 lakh on them.

As for the 66 accidents in which eight were killed and 62 injured, officials said most of the accidents occurred due to human error and road engineering defects. “Some of the notable human errors include negligent driving, over speeding, drunk driving and self-skidding of vehicles,” a senior official from the Rachakonda Traffic Police said.

The Traffic Engineering Cell staff along with inter-department officials visited eight recent fatal mishap spots and studied the cause of accidents.

Apart from this, the traffic police wing had put efforts in setting up signage boards on NH 65 near Batasingaram to prevent accidents apart from installing solar studs in some mishap spots and sticking reflectors and laying of rumble strips.
