Over 7,000 visit CCMB Open Day to explore science and health

More than 7,000 people, mostly school and college students, visited the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology’s Open Day in Hyderabad on Saturday. This year’s event focused on ‘Life Around Us’ and ‘Health’, with scientists explaining their research

Hyderabad: “Liquid nitrogen. Cancers. Eyes. Brain. Spiders,” shouted students of Guru Nanak High School, Hyderabad, as they recalled some of the new ideas they had learned at the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB)’s Open Day organised here on Saturday. The students were among more than 7,000 visitors who attended the event.

To celebrate science with the public, CCMB organises its Open Day every year, with school and college students making up most of the visitors. This year’s themes were ‘Life Around Us’ and ‘Health’. Research groups at CCMB created discussion areas showcasing their scientific research under these themes.

The event gave CCMB scientists and PhD students an opportunity to explain their work to thousands of non-scientists.

“Our work in fundamental biology research can get us disconnected from the public and their questions about us. Talking about our work as scientists with young people and hearing their responses, sometimes, validates us,” said Dr Vinay K Nandicoori, director, CCMB.
