Hyderabad: AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi’s sudden support for the Congress in the Jubilee Hills by-election, along with his criticism of the BRS government’s performance over the past decade, has drawn sharp criticism from sections of the Muslim community.

Owaisi attended the nomination rally of Congress candidate V Naveen Yadav on Friday and told the media that the BRS government had failed to develop the Jubilee Hills constituency.

The remarks mark a sharp departure from his earlier statements praising the BRS government. On a television news channel, Owaisi had previously highlighted that Rs 12,000 crore had been spent on minority development over the last decade. He also noted that 201 residential schools had been set up, with 1.20 lakh Muslim students enrolled, and over Rs 2,000 crore provided to Muslim women under the Shaadi Mubarak scheme.

Earlier, AIMIM Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi had lauded the BRS government for allocating Rs 2,200 crore for minority welfare in the state budget. Prior to the Assembly elections, he had even referred to A Revanth Reddy, then TPCC president, as “RSS Tillu,” asserting that he had come from the RSS to take over Congress leadership.

The sudden shift in stance has sparked criticism on social media. Sharing videos of Owaisi’s earlier remarks, X user Arshad wrote: “Shame on you Asaduddin Owaisi. Before the elections you called Revanth Reddy RSS anna, and now you are grovelling before the same Revanth Reddy? Are you ready to compromise the dignity and self-respect of Muslims for your political gain?”

Another user, MA Imran, recalled Owaisi’s earlier comments describing the Congress as the “mother of the RSS.”

The apparent U-turn has raised questions about AIMIM’s political strategy and credibility among its core supporters ahead of key Telangana elections.
