Hyderabad: What began as a parking dispute in Secunderabad has snowballed into a campaign against the Marwadi community, triggering calls for state-wide bandh.
The “Marwadi Go Back” campaign began after a recent altercation in Monda Market in Secunderabad over parking space between a local youth and Marwadi businessman.
Some Marwadi community members allegedly attacked a man besides passing caste-based slurs
The issue quickly escalated, triggering protests from various local organisations and student organisations.
Protesters alleged communities from Gujarat and Rajasthan have expanded aggressively in the State, cutting into local businesses.
They also accused the Marwardi traders of selling counterfeit products.
The issue triggered various student organisations, particularly from Osmania University, calling for a State-wide bandh call on Friday.
Mild tension prevailed on OU campus after the protests intensified, prompting police to arrest some university students.
Sensing trouble from the student community, police arrested OU JAC Chairman Kothapalli Tirupati, who had given a bandh call.
The OU students demanded release of all arrested student activists
Students warned the government against suppressing their democratic right to protest. They also warned that such arrests could further flare up tensions on the campus.
Opposing the campaign against Marwadi community, Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar has recently said it was politically motivated
Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh came in support of the Marwadi community, calling for strict action, including sending people to jail, for the campaign.
