Hyderabad: Online scams have been around for a long time, but with advancing technology, scammers are becoming more sophisticated in their tactics. They often impersonate well-known services and platforms to deceive users.

One of their latest targets is Netflix. Scammers are sending fake emails that claim, “Your account is on hold. Please update your payment details.” These emails contain fraudulent links designed to steal users’ personal and payment information.

If users click the link and enter their details, they unknowingly fall into the scammers’ trap.

”If you get an email or text message (SMS) asking for your Netflix account email, phone, password, or payment method it probably didn’t come from Netflix,” Netflix said.

How it works:

As the number of online fraud cases grows, the latest mode of scam is seen where hackers use ‘Netflix to hijack users’ accounts and plunder their contacts for money.

If users believe and give the information by clicking on the links, fraudsters try logging into the recipient’s Netflix account and steal the important information.

How to tell if an email or text is actually from Netflix:

Netflix never asks you to share your personal information in a text or email. This includes Credit or debit card numbers, Bank account details and Netflix passwords

Netflix never asks for payment through a 3rd party vendor or website.

If the text or email links to a URL that you don’t recognise, don’t tap or click it. If you did already, do not enter any information on the website that opened. Netflix said in a post.

What you should do:

Under any circumstances, don’t click on suspicious links in emails or texts.

Do not share personal or financial information through email.

Cross-check the sender’s address before responding to emails or texts.

To guard your devices and personal information, install anti-virus software on your devices.

Make sure to check the URL, if it’s from the official website or 3rd party website. If you have already clicked a link or shared login credentials, immediately change your password to a new one with a strong and unique from the old password.

You can approach or report to ‘phishing@netflix.com’ regarding any issue with the scams.
