Hyderabad: After evading arrest for a week, Sai Bageerath, accused in a POCSO case at Petbasheerabad police station, surrendered before Hyderabad police on Saturday evening.
However, there were conflicting reports on how Bageerath reached the Petbasheerabad police station, with some accounts suggesting he did not surrender voluntarily but was apprehended by police teams at Narsingi on the city outskirts.
Amid speculation over the suspect’s surrender, security at the police station was stepped up with barriers erected around the premises. Senior police officials reportedly monitored the security arrangements and developments through the afternoon.
The case involving inappropriate behaviour with a minor girl, which triggered widespread anger among citizens, particularly women in the state, saw the suspect evading police even after the High Court declined to grant a no-arrest order till the final outcome of the arguments on his anticipatory bail petition is announced by the vacation bench.
Reports said Sai Bageerath, accompanied by his legal team, arrived at the police station and surrendered before the investigating officer handling the case.
Following the development, the security was intensified outside the Petbasheerabad police station and the Medchal Court Complex. From the police station, Sai Bageerath was taken for a medical check-up before being produced before the magistrate, with additional security arrangements in place.
A case was registered against Sai Bageerath at Petbasheerabad police station after the victim’s mother lodged a complaint alleging repeated sexual abuse and inappropriate behaviour towards the girl. After recording the victim’s statement, the police altered the sections of the case to more serious charges, including sexual assault.
Police had issued notices to Dr. Vamshi Krishna, maternal uncle of Sai Bageerath, directing him to produce the accused before the police, but the notices were not complied with.
The police teams later carried out searches in Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Delhi and Bengaluru following inputs that Bageerath was hiding in those locations. Earlier, a Look-out Circular (LOC) had also been against him.
