Police denied permission for the BRS farmers’ rally and public meeting in Miryalaguda on September 3, citing traffic and law and order concerns. BRS leaders, however, said the protest would go ahead and asserted that KT Rama Rao would attend.

Nalgonda: Police have denied permission for the BRS party’s farmers’ rally and public meeting in Miryalaguda on September 3, citing law and order and traffic concerns. The rally and meeting are part of a week-long protest being organised by the party across the State to expose the failures of the 1,000-day Congress government.

The BRS had planned to hold the rally from the flyover bridge to Rajiv Chowk between 1 pm and 5 pm, followed by a public meeting at Rajiv Chowk. BRS working president KT Rama Rao was scheduled to participate.

Former MLA and Miryalaguda constituency in-charge Nallamothu Bhaskar Rao had sought permission, stating that the programme was aimed at highlighting farmers’ concerns, including agriculture, irrigation, power, urea shortage and Rythu Bharosa.

In its order, the Miryalaguda Sub-Divisional Police Officer said Rajiv Chowk was a major junction with narrow approach roads and heavy traffic. The police cited the lack of adequate alternative routes and parking space, warning that a large gathering could disrupt traffic on all sides.

The police also pointed out that National Highway-167, connecting Kodad and Jadcherla, passes through Rajiv Chowk and said the meeting could disrupt traffic on the highway. The presence of government and other important offices in the area was another reason cited.

However, the police said the BRS could hold a protest at a function hall or ground at another location without causing inconvenience to the public. The police reportedly also cited that Section 30 was in force in the town.

However, former Minister and Suryapet MLA G Jagadish Reddy declared that the farmers’ protest would be held in Miryalaguda despite the denial of permission. He asserted that KT Rama Rao would attend the programme, notwithstanding the Congress government’s attempts to prevent the protest.

He said while Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was questioning the absence of BRS chief and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao from public life, his continued political relevance in Telangana was causing fear among the ruling establishment. “In 1,000 days of his rule, Revanth Reddy had not spent even 1,000 seconds without referring to KCR. That indicates his fear,” he added.
