Warangal: The traffic police have started the implementation of the mandatory helmet rule strictly in the Warangal Police Commissionerate limits. The traffic police have already collected about Rs. 7.09 crore from 4.26 lakh traffic violators since January in the form of challan under the commissionerate.

According to traffic police officials, the first time offenders were fined Rs. 100 and if they continued to violate the rule, a fine of Rs. 200 would be collected from them. Most of the offenders were caught in Warangal City and Hanamkonda areas. The traffic police, who were carrying a device to record the violators and fine them, collected Rs. 100 from the violators.

The police, however, were lenient on the pillion riders, by not imposing any fine. They just warned the pillion riders by instructing them to buy helmets at the earliest. The police department has warned of stern action against violators of helmet rule in the city. The commissioner has communicated to all police stations, including traffic cops, stating that for the next few days, both the city and traffic police will focus on penalizing those riding without helmets.

Police officers have observed that people were reluctant to wear helmets and readily paid the fine.
