Hyderabad: Tension prevailed for a while at Tank Bund and the Telangana Secretariat on Sunday night after police resorted to a lathi charge to chase away people who had gathered to celebrate India’s win in the ICC Men’s T-20 World Cup 2026.

Thousands of people had gathered near the Telangana Secretariat soon after India won the T-20 World Cup by defeating New Zealand to celebrate the win.

The celebrations continued for an hour and a few youngsters climbed on to trucks and buses, blocking traffic for some time.

As the crowd was blocking the road and bursting crackers, the police, including the Quick Reaction Team led by Saifabad ACP Sanjay Kumar, resorted to a strong lathi charge, following which the people started running to save themselves.

A few individuals climbed into buses, DCM vehicles and lorries to save themselves from the baton. It is reported that around five persons were injured in the lathi charge.
