Hyderabad: The paediatric surgeons at KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad took-up a minimally invasive heart procedure to save the life of a preterm baby weighing 800 grams.
A woman had given birth to preterm twins at 26 weeks instead of the usual 37 weeks. While one twin weighed 800 grams, the other twin weighed 900 grams. Within 12 hours of life, one of the twins weighing 900 grams died while the other twin was struggling to survive due to congenital heart defect, a press release said.
The surviving twin had PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus), a medical condition that causes heart failure. Instead of opening-up the chest with an incision to perform the heart surgery, due to fragile health condition of the baby, doctors took the minimally invasive route.
A medical device ‘Piccolo Occluder’, which is a small self-expanding mesh device, was inserted through one of the vein from the groin without incision to close the heart defect. After 60-days of surgery, the baby’s weight improved to 1.5 kg and has been discharged, doctors said.
Paediatric cardiologists Dr SudeepVerma, Dr Gouthami and anaesthesiologist, Dr Nagarajan conducted the procedure while the neonatology team was led by Dr Nandakishore.
