Karimnagar: CPI activists on Thursday staged a rasta roko at Bommakal by-pass road demanding the State government to procure paddy from the farmers. Vehicular traffic came to stand still on Rajiv Rahadari for a while as farmers from Bommakal, Gunturpalli, Durshad, and Gopalpur sat on the main road.
Speaking on the occasion, CPI district secretary Ponaganti Kedari said that farmers came onto the roads as the government failed to purchase paddy by setting up adequate procurement centers. Unfortunately, it was the situation in Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar’s constituency.
Farmers suffered huge losses as paddy crop in fields as well that was shifted to purchasing centers has soaked due to untimely rains. It was the responsibility of the State and Central governments to protect the interests of farmers.
The government was not purchasing paddy though farmers cultivated and shifted the crop to purchasing centers by facing severe hardships. Both the central government led by BJP and TRS government in the State were playing with the lives of farmers by criticizing each other on paddy procurement. CPI would continue the agitation till paddy was procured, he warned.
Karimnagar rural police led by CI Vignan Rao rushed to the spot and cleared the road for vehicular traffic by convincing the agitating party workers and farmers.
CPI leaders Koyyada Srujan Kumar, Pilli Komuraiah, Kasireddy Surender Reddy, Kasireddy Manikanta Reddy and others participated in rasta roko.
