Kumram Bheem Asifabad: The State government’s contemplation to construct a barrage across Wardha river near Veerdhandi village in Koutala mandal rekindled hopes of farmers of Sirpur (T) Assembly constituency who were demanding irrigation facilities for quite a long time.
Farmers of Sirpur (T) segment have been protesting seeking better irrigation facilities ever since the government modified the proposed Dr BR Ambedkar Pranahita-Chevella Sujala Sravanthi project which included a barrage across the river at Thumdihetti village in Koutala mandal in 2014. District Collector Rahul Raj and authorities of various departments visited the site of the proposed barrage at Veerdhandi village on Saturday. Already, the government has mulled to create the irrigation project by constructing a barrage across Wardha river to provide irrigation facilities to the district and other parts of erstwhile Adilabad.
Forest Minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy and Special Secretary to Chief Minister’s Office Smitha Sabharwal along with other higher authorities of the Irrigation Department are scheduled to visit the site of the barrage on Tuesday. These developments cheered farmers and citizens of this Assembly constituency.T
he ambitious multi-stage Dr BR Ambedkar Pranahita-Chevella Sujala Sravanti lift irrigation project was cancelled, citing submergence of over 2,000 hectares of land in Maharashtra. As a result, Kaleshwarm Lift Irrigation Scheme was taken up by constructing a barrage across Godavari at Medigadda in Mahadevapur mandal of Prof Jayashankar Bhupalapalli district.
It may be recalled that nearly Rs 693 crore was spent for building canals under Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project in 2008. The works were divided into three packages. Compensation of Rs 1.27 lakh per acre was given to farmers whose lands were acquired to construct the canals measuring 30 kilometres in Koutala, Chintalamanepalli, Bejjur and Dahegaon mandals.
