Khammam: Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar has asserted that protecting TSRTC properties was his responsibility while rubbishing rumours on handing over the RTC bus station in Khammam to private parties.

The Congress and the Left parties have been staging protests under the banner of ‘Old Bus Stand Protection Committee’ for the past few days demanding to continue bus operations at the existing bus stand after the inauguration of the new bus station.

“As the existing bus stand has become old and is unable to handle the increased vehicle traffic and passengers rush, it was planned to build a modern bus stand at the by-pass road to meet the future needs of the passengers,” Ajay Kumar told Telangana Today.

The Minister stated that a few “outdated parties” and their leaders in Khammam were trying to instigate the public over a non-existing issue and obstructing the plans to run services from the new bus station constructed on over seven acres. He pointed out that the same political parties that are creating a ruckus now, had earlier staged protests demanding construction of a new bus station stating that the existing one has become congested.

It was the previous governments that sold RTC properties while the TRS government has been protecting them, he said. He said at many places in the State, the RTC properties were being developed by setting up fuel stations, constructing malls among others to fulfil public needs.

While making it clear that the existing bus station would continue to serve the public, Ajay Kumar said the government would utilise the existing bus station in the best interests of the people in Khammam.

Meanwhile, RTC officials informed that their plans to run services from the new bus station from Monday were on hold. The new date would be announced later, they added.
