Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) President Mohammed Azharuddin appointed a new-look ad-hoc five-man senior selection committee of Ahmed Quadri (chairman), Zakir Hussain, Alfred Absolom, Faiz Ahmed and Amol Shinde.

According to the Lodha Committee Reforms, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is required for the appointment of senior selectors and coaches. As Azharuddin, who is in-charge of the HCA administration after the suspension of the five office-bearers, could not find suitable players for the CAC he appointed an ad-hoc panel yet again.

Ahmed Quadri

Azharuddin had told Telangana Today that in the last Annual General Meeting they had appointed SL Venkatapathy Raju, Purnima Rau and Sudeep Tyagi for the CAC. The first two declined the offer leading to another stalemate. “We had approached many big players but they refused to join the CAC,’’ said Azharuddin.

With the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament scheduled to start from October 29, Azhar said he took the step of appointing an ad-hoc panel to select the team for this tournament only. This is the second time an ad-hoc panel has been appointed after it was done in 2019 and it was headed by Noel David. Last season, a two-member selection panel selected the players for the T20 tournament.

Incidentally, the ‘suspended’ secretary R Vijayanand said in a statement that former Test all-rounder MV Narasimha Rao along with Tyagi and Shravanthi Naidu had announced that ‘the CAC’ had appointed Noel David (chairman), Mirza Fiaz Baig, Arvind Shetty, K Sainath and Amol Shinde as selectors but it was not recognised by Azharuddin.

The coach has yet to be named for the team. Last season, Anirudh Singh had managed the senior team as coach.

With the inaugural Tiger Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi T20 Cup getting underway from Monday, the selectors, according to HCA officials, will watch the players in action before selecting the team to the Mushtaq Ali tournament.

Meanwhile, Azharuddin will leave for the UAE on October 13 to attend the IPL final on the invitation of the BCCI which is on October 15.
