Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Special Operations Team along with Bhongir police busted an online cricket betting racket and arrested four persons including organisers and punters in Bhongir Town here on Saturday. Police seized Rs 65,000 in cash, a bike and other material.
The arrested persons are M Shiva Kumar Reddy, A Naresh, M Vinay and K Jani, all residents of Husnabad in Bhongir Town of Yadadri-Bhongir district.
According to the police, Shiva Kumar and Naresh who are close friends since childhood started organising cricket betting online, for easy money. As per their plan, they downloaded ‘Dream Exchange’, an illegal online cricket betting app to organise betting on the 14th IPL season matches.
“The duo then lured Vinay and Jani by offering high returns on the betting money if they win. They started organising the illegal activity from a car décor shop of Naresh located in Bhongir town,” said Rachakonda Police Commissioner, Mahesh Bhagwat. Betting is done on different odds including toss winning, ball to ball scoring, dismissal of batsmen and winning team,he said.
Before the match, they start betting from Rs 5,000. On completion of the match, the organiser returns double payment to the winners. This illegal activity was going on since the start of the IPL season this year.
“This entire transaction is online and during these illegal transactions, the organiser and the punters make cash payments, as well as digital payments using Googlepay, Phonepay and Paytm,” the Commissioner said.
Following a tip-off, the police raided the premises and caught the gang while organising betting on the match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. Bhagwat warned citizens not to indulge in cricket betting.
