Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Police, since its inception in 2016, have rescued 599 victims, including 137 minors, from human trafficking.
Rachakonda Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat, speaking at a convergence meeting of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) here, said 300 cases were booked and 564 traffickers were arrested as well. “The AHTU was formed in July last year and since then, 29 human trafficking cases were cracked, rescuing over 109 victims and nabbing 76 traffickers,” he said.
Of the victims rescued from sex trafficking, a majority were from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Bangladesh, officials said, adding that 115 brothel houses were seized and 76 human traffickers were detained under the Preventive Detention Act so far.
G Uday Kumar, Secretary District Legal Services Authority, Rangareddy District, suggested that mini anganwadis be set up where at least 20 children were found to be living on worksites. Prajwala founder Sunita Krishnan lauded the quick action in tracing missing persons by the Rachakonda Police.
Suggestions to be worked on put forth during the discussion included according police station status to the AHTU, working with AHTUs in other States, awareness on schemes by the State government, daily monitoring of trafficking cases, rehabilitation to empower victims to depose against crime and criminals to make Rachakonda and Telangana trafficking free and so on.
