Hyderabad: Coming down heavily on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy over the failure of his government to protect women in the State, BRS leader and former Minister Satyavathi Rathod said the brutal rape incident in Jubilee Hills stood as a stark example of the deteriorating law and order situation in Telangana.
Referring to the assault on a Dalit woman in Rahmat Nagar in Jubilee Hills constituency, which occurred in an area with heavy police deployment, she said no protection was provided to the victim. It was doubtful whether Revanth Reddy, who holds the Home Ministry portfolio as well, had even inquired about the case so far.
Criticising Revanth Reddy’s dual role as Home and Municipal Administration Minister, Rathod alleged that he had failed to conduct proper reviews despite a surge in crimes against women.
“Departments under his watch are non-functional today, from garbage collection in Hyderabad to women’s safety, with the police now dancing to the tunes of the ruling party while crimes are on the increasing,” she said, also targeting women ministers in the cabinet, accusing them of prioritising personal gains over addressing atrocities.
“Do women ministers even notice crimes against women? Their focus seems to be on their own earnings.” She contrasted this with the previous BRS regime under K. Chandrashekhar Rao, praising the ‘She Teams’ as a “protective shield” for women and the installation of a record number of CCTV cameras across Hyderabad, many of which were however, currently non-functional.
The BRS leader urged strict punishment for the accused in the Rahmat Nagar case and called on Congress candidate Naveen Yadav from Jubilee Hills to cease threatening BRS workers and instead console the victim.
