Hyderabad: Tourism Minister V Srinivas Goud said it was Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s guidance and efforts that helped in getting UNESCO World Heritage status for Ramappa Temple.
“The Chief Minister has a great vision in developing tourism prospects in the State and accordingly initiatives are being taken up. The recognition for Ramappa Temple should have come in undivided Andhra Pradesh but successive governments failed to put in the required effort. We achieved it now due to relentless efforts put in by the TRS government,” he said.
Speaking to Telangana Today, the Minister said for the last couple of years, nearly 50 meetings were held with Archaeological Survey of India, Union Ministry of Tourism and other officials to get Ramappa Temple nominated for the recognition.
Stating that MA&UD Minister K T Rama Rao helped in the endeavour, the Minister said the Municipal Administration department established the Palampeta Special Development Authority (PSDA) to preserve the sanctity of Ramappa pond, hills, and forest lands surrounding the temple.
On the benefits of UNESCO recognition, the Minister said it will take Telangana onto the international tourist map. Apart from tourists from other States, many international tourists will now be keen to visit Ramappa Temple, he said.
This apart, it will boost employment opportunities for local youngsters and facilitate in enhancing infrastructure. With the influx of visitors, especially international tourists, the hospitality sector will prosper and youth can explore more opportunities in travel agencies and serving as guides, he informed.
Meanwhile, Archaeology department Additional Director General Janhwij Sharma in a statement said for five years, a total of three historic monuments competed for World Heritage Site recognition, but due to technical reasons, Khila Warangal (fort) and Thousand Pillars Temple failed to make it to the final list. Ramappa Temple in Palampeta, Venkatapuram Mandal, Mulugu District is the only temple selected and conferred with UNESCO Heritage Site.
He said the Ramappa Temple gained international recognition with the approval of 17 countries. So far, the World Heritage List includes 1,121 monuments from 167 countries.
