Ranveer Mitroo clinched the IGU Telangana Amateur Golf Championship with a bogey-free final round of 63, finishing at 13-under 267 for a three-shot win over Gulfam Hussain to secure his maiden amateur title
Hyderabad: Ranveer Mitroo reserved his best for last, firing a bogey-free seven-under 63 on the final day to annex the IGU Telangana Amateur Golf Championship title at the Hyderabad Golf Club here on Friday.
The 17-year-old’s final-day heroics took his four-day tally to an impressive 13-under 267 for a three-shot victory over Gulfam Hussain. The overnight joint leader shot a gritty three-under 67 under pressure to edge out roommate Deepak Yadav (68) and Anshul Mishra (67) by one stroke on another scorching day.
Mitroo scorched the course on a pressure-filled Friday. Starting the day one stroke behind the Railways duo of Yadav and Hussain, the Delhi teenager got down to business, picking up shots on the third, fifth and seventh holes on the front nine to be tied for the lead with Yadav.
Hussain, who had made his intentions clear with a birdie-birdie start, faltered on the two par-5s (fifth and eighth) to fritter away the advantage. On the return journey, Yadav failed to get going and fell out of contention, while Mitroo did not let up. He made four birdies, holing tough 8-10-foot putts with ease.
Hussain made a late charge with birdies on the 14th, 15th and 16th to reduce the lead to two strokes with two holes to play. He missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th, which Mitroo too failed to convert. There was no drama on the final hole as the Delhi teen signed off with a birdie, sinking a 10-footer to clinch his maiden amateur victory.
“It feels really, really good,” said an elated Mitroo. “It has been a long time coming,” added the youngster, who finished second behind Veer Ganapathy in the same event last year.
