Hyderabad: Osmania University students from the New Godavari hostel on Tuesday night launched a huge protest when a student found a razor blade in a curry that was served for dinner in the hostel mess. The angry students squatted on the university’s main road carrying the curry vessel and the plate.

Students raised slogans against the administration, stating that the varsity was playing with their lives. They wanted Vice Chancellor Prof M Kumar to meet them and address their issues.

Worms, glass pieces in food

According to protesters, this was not an isolated instance of finding a foreign object in the food. Two days ago, worms were found in the cabbage curry, they alleged.

“Earlier, a student found glass pieces in the food. Whenever we raise the issue, the mess staff say that it will not be repeated but it is recurring every other day,” said Ch Druhan, MA Philosophy student and Osmania University ABVP president.

He further said the staff were not working as per the schedule, forcing the students to serve for themselves, particularly during dinner time.

“We are being billed Rs 2,500-Rs 3,000 per month for substandard food served in the hostel mess. Despite our numerous pleas to the university administration seeking a solution, the issue persists,” he said.

Water woes

Students also lamented about water issues in the hostel, which were causing them health issues.

“There is no water supply to the hostels. Water tankers are being used to supply water. We don’t know from where the water is being brought but students are falling ill often. Instead of water tankers, we want the administration to go for a borewell,” students added.
