Hyderabad: With no response from the Centre, the Roads and Buildings Department is gearing up to repair the roads, which were damaged due to heavy rains across the State during monsoon season. The department has identified nearly 3,000 km of damaged stretches and as per preliminary estimates, it costs about Rs 1,000 crore to repair these. These works are expected to commence in January and plans are being made to complete them before May 31.
During July, August, September and October, there were heavy rains across the State. As a result, portions of many State Highways, major district roads, inter-district roads and other stretches got damaged severely, Roads and Building Engineer-in-Chief P Ravinder Rao said.
Soon after the rains receded, the department had submitted a report on the extent of road damages in the State to the National Disaster Management Authority in October, seeking assistance. But there was no response from the authority, he said, adding generally when heavy rains occur, Centre extends some assistance.

Basic repairs were taken upon several key stretches to avoid any untoward incidents. However, earlier this month, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao instructed the R&B Department to identify the damaged road stretches and take up repairs at the earliest.
Accordingly, the department assessed district-wise damages and identified 510 damaged stretches, covering 2937.26 km in nine circles. The proposals have been sent to the State government for approval and once the permissions are accorded, tenders will be floated to execute the works. “Plans are being made to commence works in January and complete them before May 31,” Ravinder Rao said.
