Khammam: Activists of Student Federation of India (SFI) have laid a siege to the district collectorate here on Monday demanding the government to release pending scholarships and fee reimbursement dues. The federation State secretary Talla Nagaraj said that due to the non-release of the scholarships and fees reimbursement dues, students were forced to quit their studies. The managements of colleges were refusing to give the certificates to students if they fail to pay the fee on the condition of only after the reimbursement dues are released by the government, he said.

As a result, poor students were dropping out of schools and colleges and going for other jobs. The SFI demanded the government release Rs 3,000 crore worth of scholarships and fee reimbursements which have been pending for the past two years with the immediate effect, Nagaraj said. Nearly 15 lakh students have been waiting for scholarship and fee reimbursement in Telangana. As the college managements were not giving certificates to students, it was causing serious difficulties for them to pursue higher studies, he complained.

On the other hand, parents of the students were forced to take loans to pay the college fees and resulting in them falling into the debt trap. Some of the students were even committing suicide as the college managements denied issuance of their certificates, Nagaraj said. SFI district secretary J Ashok, district president V Madh and others were present.
