Hyderabad: Heavy rains continued to lash Telangana on Sunday, disrupting normal life in some places. Majority of the water bodies including reservoirs and tanks, which have been receiving huge inflows following incessant rains in their respective catchment areas for the past few days, are brimming at full capacity with some even overflowing.
In a lone casualty, a 38-year-old vegetable vendor, Gaddam Anil of Gurijala village in Narsampet mandal, was washed away in Peddonivagu stream after his two-wheeler skid while crossing a low-level bridge on the swollen stream. He was reportedly returning home after selling vegetables in Narsampet when the incident occurred.
Parts of Hyderabad and surrounding districts witnessed downpour since morning affecting normal life. Hyderabad traffic police cautioned motorists to drive carefully. The police advised pedestrians not to stand under trees or near electric poles. Many low-lying areas were also inundated with rain water and the officials were put on alert to ensure that the residents are moved to safer locations in case the downpour continues.
In neighbouring Sangareddy district, the Nallavagu project across Nallavagu stream at Sirgapur started overflowing due to heavy inflows from upstream. Several other streams and rivulets were also overflowing affecting road connectivity in some parts, particularly in remote areas. In erstwhile Adilabad district, hill streams were in spate affecting connectivity to a few remote villages. However, the incessant rains did not deter farmers from continuing with their farm operations. In fact, the rains spurred agriculture activity as farmers intensified paddy, cotton and soya sowing operations in many districts.
With southwest monsoon active over the State, the low pressure area over Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts with an associated cyclonic circulation caused heavy rains. Very heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in Nirmal and Nagarkurnool districts, while heavy rainfall occurred at a few places in Badradri Kothagudem, Karimnagar districts and at isolated places in Siddipet, Wanaparthy, Mahabubabad and Jogulamba Gadwal districts. The highest rainfall of 13 cm was recorded in Khanpur of Nirmal district and 12 cm in Nagarkurnool, with Burgampadu and Aswapuram (Bhadradri Kothagudem district) receiving 10 cm rainfall each.
