Hyderabad: Members of the Medchal Metro Sadhana Yatra (MMSS), including residents and representatives of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), took part in a padayatra on Sunday, demanding that the Telangana government announce the JBS-Medchal metro corridor under Hyderabad Metro Phase II for the benefit of the northern parts of Hyderabad, including Medchal, Kompally, Shamirpet and Gandimaisamma.

The padayatra, which started from the Gandhi Statue in Jeedimetla and proceeded to the first pillar of the proposed Medchal Metro corridor at Suchitra (JBS Metro Hub), sought to draw the attention of both the Central and State governments to the need to announce Hyderabad Metro Phase II for the rapidly growing northern part of the city.

Metro Rail has been projected as the backbone of sustainable urban transport, with calls for Hyderabad to urgently expand its network to meet the growing mobility needs of its expanding population, members of the Medchal Metro Sadhana Samithi said.

The JBS-Medchal Metro project is yet to receive approval from the Central government despite recommendations from the State government. The organisers said the delay was denying lakhs of commuters access to an efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable mode of transport.
