Hyderabad: People living in fear of displacement due to the Congress government’s proposed Gandhi Sarovar project and the Musi Rejuvenation Project have sent postcards to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, urging him to dissuade Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy from proceeding with the projects.

Irrespective of age or profession, those likely to be affected wrote to Rahul Gandhi ahead of the March 13 event during which the State government is scheduled to release the detailed project report (DPR) and master plan for the Musi Rejuvenation Project. The DPR will also include estimates for the Gandhi Sarovar project. The affected families want Rahul Gandhi to intervene before the project moves ahead.

Meanwhile, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Tushar Gandhi continued to voice his opposition to the proposed mammoth statue of his grandfather, stating that any project undertaken by a government should be carried out with the consent of the people affected, failing which it would go against the principles of democracy.

In a video message, he told the affected families that his sympathies were with them and urged them to continue their fight, stating that merely because he had raised his voice, things would not automatically become right.

Stating that the belief among those in government that they were kings and rulers represented the biggest failure of democracy, Tushar Gandhi said he had always opposed the “politics of statues”. Statues will not inspire anyone, he said, adding that he did not wish for a statue of Bapu anywhere. In Hyderabad, if citizens remained vigilant, it would make a difference. The government would realise that citizens were awake and would not be able to get away with things as they had earlier.
