Hyderabad: State unit of Congress party condemned what it termed as high-handed behaviour of police in placing several leaders under house arrest and obstructing them from participating in a party programme.

On Saturday, TPCC president A Revanth Reddy said he wanted to pay tributes to Telangana martyr Srikanth Chary at LB Nagar crossroads. “Why are we being stopped from paying tributes to Srikanth Chary, who laid down his life for statehood cause?” asked Revanth Reddy in an argument with police at his residence in Jubilee Hills.

Revanth Reddy along with TPCC Political Affairs Committee convener Mohammed Ali Shabbir and other leaders staged a protest at his residence against the Police Department. He wanted the TRS government to desist from intimidating tactics. Congress was demanding justice for students and jobless youth but the government was suppressing the party’s voice, he charged.

The party had launched the ‘Vidyarthi Nirudyoga Jung Siren’ and a rally was planned from Dilsukhnagar to LB Nagar. The TPCC president said that Congress leaders were placed under House arrest and prevented from participating in the party programme by police officials.

He instructed the party workers to stage protests across the State on Sunday and burn the effigies of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao.

Earlier, police resorted to lathi charge at LB Nagar as Congress workers attempted to pay tributes to Srikanth Chary’s statue and a party activist created a flutter by trying to set himself ablaze. There was traffic jam for a while at the crossroads.
