Nirmal: A protest launched by students of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT), Basar, against poor medical facilities on the campus entered its second day on Wednesday.
The agitating students said that Mallipudi Tejashwini, a 17-year-old from Ramachandrapuram in Medak district and a Pre-University Course second-year student of the university, died of leukaemia while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad on Monday. They attributed her death to the lack of medical facilities at the varsity and alleged negligence by the authorities.
The students, who laid siege to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, raised slogans demanding justice. They expressed concern that the university, which caters to thousands of students, lacked diagnostic centres and basic amenities. They opined that the student might have survived had her disease been diagnosed at an early stage, and demanded compensation of Rs. 50 lakh for Tejashwini’s family.
The students continued their protest, sleeping on the road in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office during the night. They said they would continue the agitation until the authorities took steps to improve medical services on the campus. They also stated that the university was not adequately equipped with doctors and nursing staff.
