Nirmal: Investigations into the fall of a student at Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT)-Basar revealed that she accidentally slipped off the hostel building, ruling out the possibility of a suicide attempt.
The girl student from Sangareddy district studying Pre-University Course first year sustained head injuries when she fell from a campus hostel building on June 17. “As per our investigations, she accidentally fell from the hostel building,” a police official said ruling out the possibility of a suicide attempt, as alleged by a section of students.
However, parents expressed concern over deaths of students at the institution at regular intervals. For instance, R Vasantha (18), a first-year engineering student died allegedly by suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel on campus on February 25. She ended her life as she was reportedly depressed after her cousin expressed his inability to marry her.
Earlier, Buchuka Aravind (17), a student of Pre-University Course (PUC) II year at the RGUKT-Basar also died by suicide on campus as he was allegedly disheartened after facing detention by the university due to low attendance in 2024.
On February 22 of the same year, Tenugu Shirisha (17), a PUC I year student resorted to the drastic step in her hostel of RGUKT-Basar as she was unable to bear the death of Akash with whom she reportedly was in love. Ramati Praveen Kumar (20) from Nagar Kurnool district was found dead of suicide on November 26.
RGUKT officials said steps were being taken to prevent such incidents. They stated that centres were created to provide counselling to students undergoing mental stress, psychological issues and any other problem. Doctors, caretakers and mentors have been appointed to help the students in many ways.
