Hyderabad: Rocks Matter, an event to admire the rocks in the city, was held here on Friday. As a part of the programme, a virtual rock photo exhibition was also held. Participants admired the great granites, the onion skin weathering and the pink rocks that are unique to the Telangana landscape.
The Society to Save Rocks, an NGO, in association with Goethe Zentrum Hyderabad, organised the event. Karin Stoll, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Chennai inaugurated the event.
“Rock conservation is as important as saving forests because both are rich in resources and play their roles in the ecology of the planet. The lone NGO in India that works exclusively for rock conservation is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year,” said Aparajita Sinha, one of the founding members of the society.
Other participants also emphasised on the need for rock conservation. “With the understanding that not all rocks can be preserved, integration of rocks into living spaces and conservation is being actively promoted,” said Sangeeta Varma, who curated the exhibition along with Ashok Kumar Vootla. Society to Save Rocks secretary Frauke Quader urged the government and the public to take cognizance of the importance of rocks in the ecological balance and take steps to conserve them.
