Hyderabad: The UN is a global organisation that helps to maintain international peace and security, cooperate with different countries and harmonize the actions taken by the nations. It has become the foremost forum to address the issues that exceed the national boundaries.

It maintains international peace and security to prevent disputes from arising and escalating into conflicts. The most important action taken by the UN is Sustainable Development Goals which helps promote the wellbeing of people while protecting the planet. Here are some important goals:

End poverty: Due to the Covid -19 crisis there is a fight against poverty because unemployment increased. According to the UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research warns that the pandemic could increase the global poverty by as much as half a billion people which is also 8% of the total world population.

More than 10% of the entire world’s population still faces poverty. To support the poorest and most vulnerable, the UN has issued a Framework for the immediate socio-economic response to COVID-19, calling for an extraordinary scale-up of international support and political commitment to ensure that people everywhere have access to essential services and social protection.

Zero hunger: The majority of the world’s undernourished (381 million are still found in Asia. The World Food Programme’s food assistance programme provides a critical lifeline to 87 million vulnerable people across the world.

Quality education: Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. Over the past decade, major progress was made towards increasing access to education and school enrolment rates at all levels, particularly for girls. At present at least one fifth of the total population has no access to education. The UN has initiated the global monitoring of national and localized school closures.

Water and Sanitation: Water and Sanitation is really important to lead a life. Clean water leads to a healthy life and good sanitation improves the quality of life. Due to its importance in life, the UN has launched The water action decade to prevent water loss.
