Rome Olympian footballer Shahid Hakim passes away

It is shocking news,’’ said Tulsi Balaram, the Olympian, who also played in the 1960 Olympics. He played in the centre half position. Although he was in the Indian team he never got a chance to play in a match.

Hyderabad: Syed Shahid Hakim, who played in the 1960 Rome Olympics and son of legendary football coach late SS Rahim, passed away in Gulbarga (Karnataka) on Sunday. He was 82. He died of cardiac arrest. He had recovered from Covid-19 last year.

“It is shocking news,’’ said Tulsi Balaram, the Olympian, who also played in the 1960 Olympics. “He played in the centre half position. Although he was in the Indian team he never got a chance to play in a match. He was a great footballer lover. He continued his association with the game as an international refereem’’ said Balaram from Kolkata.

Associated with the India Air Force, Hakim was a squadron leader. He received the prestigious Dhyan Chand Award for Life Time Achievement in Sports and Games in 2017. He has served as the Chief Project Director at Sports Authority of India (SAI) for the last decade or so.

After his playing career, he officiated in 33 international games till 1989, including the 1988 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar.
