Minister P Ajay Kumar, Congress leader Bhatti Vikramarka and MP N Nageswar Rao handed over cash cheques to A Mariyamma's daughters at Komatlagudem in Khammam on Monday.
Khammam: Lock-up death victim Ambadipudi Mariamma’s family received the Rs 35 lakh compensation promised by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday.
Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar, accompanied by MP Nama Nageswar Rao and Congress Legislature Party leader Bhatti Vikramarka visited the family at Komatlagudem village in Chintakani mandal in the district and handed over the cheques to Mariamma’s son and two daughters.
Mariamma, it may be recalled, died in the custody of Addagudur police of Yadadri-Bhongir district recently. An appointment order for her son A Uday Kiran was also handed over along with Rs 15 lakh cheque while her daughters Swapna and Sujatha were given Rs 10 lakh cheques each as promised by the Chief Minister.
Speaking to media persons, Ajay Kumar said the Chief Minister had taken the custodial death of Mariamma very seriously and action was already taken against the police officials and staff responsible for her death. “The State government was taking all the required measures for the welfare of the Dalits in Telangana,” the Minister said.
Similarly, the heads of police departments were directed to initiate measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future, the minister said while expressing grief at the death of Mariamma. Proper medical care to Kiran would be taken care, he noted.
Nageswar Rao said the Chief Minister responded promptly to provide assistance to the affected family soon after the custodial death incident came to his notice. The government took various measures for the well being and progress of Dalits, he said.
Zilla Parishad Chairman, L Kamalraj, TS Seeds Development Corporation Chairman, K Koteshwar Rao, District Collector, RV Karnan, Commissioner of Police, Vishnu S Warrier, District Social Welfare Officer, K Satyanarayana and others were present.
Before handing over the government offered assistance to the family members, Ajay Kumar and Nageswar Rao have paid homage to Mariamma, interacted with the family members and consoled them.
