New Delhi: The Russian Embassy in India on Sunday organised a cleanliness drive in the national capital as part of its “We Stand for Cleanness” environmental project, aligning the initiative with India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The drive was conducted around the embassy’s residential premises, with active participation from diplomats, officials, and staff members. The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage collective responsibility towards maintaining cleanliness.

Speaking to IANS, Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, said the effort was a symbolic yet meaningful contribution to a global cause.

“I was saying that it seems NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) has not left much for us to do, but still, we are happy to initiate this event this morning and make our humble contribution to cleanliness in the world, including India and Russia. The cleaner we live, the cleaner we make our countries, it will be better for the whole world,” he said.

Highlighting the global nature of environmental challenges, Alipov added that pollution remains a pressing concern for all nations. “I believe pollution is a major issue for every country, and India has also suffered a lot from it. Such voluntary movements certainly help in tackling such issues,” he noted.

Diana Alipov, wife of the Ambassador, stressed the importance of behavioural change in addressing the problem of littering. “I really think it is important to educate people not to litter. This is the most important step, and such initiatives set an example for everyone, both adults and the younger generation. We need to think about not throwing garbage around,” she said.

Participants in the drive described the initiative as a rewarding and meaningful experience. One of them said, “This is a very good experience. I think it is a valuable experience and a positive step for our world and for this country.”

Another participant highlighted the cultural aspect behind such activities. “It is a good tradition in Russia to occasionally work together with colleagues and join the team for a good cause. Basically, that is why we are here. We are working to merge Russian and Indian interests,” the participant said.

The event reflects growing cooperation between India and Russia, not only in strategic and economic domains but also in social and environmental initiatives, reinforcing the shared commitment towards sustainability and civic responsibility.
