Hyderabad: With the 72-hour strike by the employees of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) coming to an end on Saturday, the management requested them to join duty from Sunday since the SCCL has suffered a loss of Rs.120 crore during the strike period.
Since 4.5 lakh tonnes of coal production was affected in the last three days, the management urged the staff to set up targets to overcome the losses. The Singareni unions took part in the strike demanding that the Central government withdraw auction of four coal blocks – JVR OC-III, Shravanapally, Koyagudem and KK6 incline in Telangana apart from pressing for other demands.
During talks held with unions in the presence of Regional Labour Commissioner, the management explained that the issue pertaining to auction of coal blocks ccan only be settled by the Centre, which has taken a policy decision on auctioning blocks.
When unions said they would meet the Union Coal Minister and other officials concerned in New Delhi on the issue, the SCCL management assured that they would extend necessary support to them.
The management explained that it had written 10 letters to the Ministry of Coal requesting to hand over the four coal blocks to Singareni instead of auctioning them. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.
Since unions decided to discuss the issue with the Ministry of Coal, the Regional Labour Commissioner has advised the SCCL and unions to settle other demands through mutual discussions. Both the SCCL and unions decided to meet again on January 20 to discuss the demands and other pending issues.
Meanwhile, the management has urged the employees to start work on Sunday, though it is a holiday, by making changes in rules, for transporting coal from coal handling plants. The decision was taken to meet the coal requirements of the State and the country to generate power.
