Khammam: Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt warned of strict legal action against individuals who were deliberately spreading rumours on social media about an incident that took place during a Tiranga rally held in Khammam on Monday night.

He appealed to the public not to trust rumours being spread on social media. During the rally organised by the BJP, two other youngsters traveling on a motorcycle from ZP Centre towards Khanapuram Haveli were stopped by a traffic constable at Yellandu crossroads as the rally was going on.

The youths, saying that they were going on urgent work entered into an argument with the traffic constable. Noticing this, some BJP activists in the rally also got into an argument with the youths in support of the traffic constable and it led to a scuffle, the CP said.

Police on bandobust duty reached the spot; took the two youths and the BJP activists involved in the incident to the Khammam Two-Town police station. Police registered two separate cases against the two groups and are investigating the case, Dutt said while asking the groups concerned to maintain peace and harmony.

It might be noted that tension prevailed for some time at the police station during late night hours as some members of a community to which the youths belong reached the police station and shouted religious slogans. Police dispersed the crowd and brought the situation into control.

Meanwhile, the local BJP leaders who called for Khammam city bandh on Tuesday in protest against the Monday’s incident have withdrawn the call at the directions of the party’s State leaders.
