Kumram Bheem Asifabad: The BRS made a comeback in the local body polls by securing the highest number of sarpanch posts in the district in the second phase of elections.

BRS-backed candidates won in 45 villages across the district, while 24 Congress-supported candidates registered victories. As many as 23 BJP-backed candidates and 21 others also emerged victorious in the polls held in 113 villages across six mandals, Bejjur, Chintalamanepalli, Dahegaon, Koutala, Penchikalpet and Sirpur (T), on Sunday.

Significantly, the BRS bagged 15 villages out of a total of 22 in Bejjur mandal and 11 out of 20 villages in Koutala mandal. Six BRS-backed candidates won in Chintalamanepalli mandal, while four each secured victories in Dahegaon and Penchikalpet mandals. Three candidates supported by the party clinched victories in Sirpur (T) mandal.

BRS leader Koneru Konappa expressed happiness over the party’s performance in the polls. He said people voted in favour of BRS-backed candidates as they were vexed with the Congress rule and its anti-people policies. He expressed confidence that the party would continue its winning streak in the third phase as well.

In the first phase of elections, BRS-backed candidates had won in 40 villages out of the total 114 gram panchayats that went to polls in the district, while Congress-supported nominees triumphed in 53 villages. The BJP was confined to two villages, while candidates from other parties won in 18 villages.
