Hyderabad: The iconic Martyrs Memorial, popularly known as ‘Veerula Sainik Smarak’, at the 20-acre Gen K V Krishna Rao Parade Ground in Secunderabad Cantonment is set to be relocated to make way for a proposed elevated corridor. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will construct a similar memorial at a nearby location at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore.
The relocation is linked to the proposed elevated corridor connecting Gymkhana Grounds to the Outer Ring Road at Shamirpet via State Highway-1, also known as Rajiv Rahadari.
This will be the second martyrs’ memorial to make way for the elevated corridor project, following the relocation of a decades-old World War II memorial outside Parade Ground.
Demarcation of the land required for acquisition was completed a few years ago. HMDA is now acquiring land extending up to 20 metres from the road, which runs alongside the Martyrs Memorial platform inside Parade Ground, to facilitate the project.
HMDA sources told Telangana Today that Defence authorities had agreed to shift the existing memorial to a nearby location within Parade Ground.
The new memorial will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore. Officials said it would feature landscaped lawns and an expanded architectural layout, creating a dedicated space for remembrance away from the noise of the main highway.
The new memorial is expected to offer an unobstructed view and a more dignified setting, an official said.
Work on the platform at Parade Ground is under way and is expected to be completed by December. The new Martyrs Memorial is scheduled to be installed by March or April 2027, HMDA sources said.
