Hyderabad: The redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station, one of the busiest and most historic stations in South Central Railway (SCR), is progressing swiftly, with almost 50 per cent works being completed and expected to be ready by next year.
The redevelopment works are taken up under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at transforming it into a world-class transit hub with modern passenger amenities and improved connectivity.
The ambitious project, taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 714.73 crore, has achieved nearly 50 per cent completion so far. The works are being executed by Girdharilal Construction Private Limited, with the target set for completion by the end of 2026.
According to SCR officials, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) building has been fully completed, marking a major milestone in the redevelopment drive. Construction is actively underway for the air concourse, multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility, foot over bridges (FOBs), elevators, north-side main building, and south-side electrical substation, among other components.
On the south side, about 90 per cent of basement construction has been completed. The ground floor of this section will serve as a passenger drop-off zone, while the basement levels are being designed to accommodate parking for nearly 200 vehicles.
On the north side, construction of a six-storey multi-level car parking facility is progressing, with over half of the foundation works completed.
The foundation work for a new foot overbridge towards the Kazipet end has also been completed, enhancing passenger movement between platforms once operational.
To meet the increased power demand of the redeveloped complex, two new 33 kV substations have been installed, replacing the existing 11 kV setup. This upgrade will ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply to the modernised station and its new facilities.
SCR officials emphasised that the redevelopment has been carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing passenger services. The upcoming station complex will feature modern architecture, energy-efficient designs, and state-of-the-art amenities such as spacious waiting halls, escalators, lifts, digital information systems, and enhanced safety infrastructure.
“The redevelopment works are being monitored closely to maintain pace and quality. All construction activities are being undertaken with strict adherence to safety standards,” said a SCR senior official.
Once completed, the redeveloped Secunderabad railway station will offer improved commuter experience, enhanced accessibility, and a modern urban design reflective of Hyderabad’s growing importance as a metropolitan hub.
