Hyderabad: Round Table India honoured senior obstetrician and a pioneer in midwifery, Dr Evita Fernandez with Pride of Telangana award for her work in the field of medicine and acknowledged her as a ‘true role model’ for the society.

Dr Evita, who is the Chairperson of Fernandez Foundation, is synonymous with the cause of promoting midwifery and is known for her efforts to promote normal birth while reducing medical interventions. The senior obstetrician is also well-known for her work on reducing the practice of caesarean sections and making childbirth a natural and positive experience for all women.

Dr Evita’s parents, Leslie and Lourdes Fernandez started Fernandez Hospital in 1948 with just two beds and under her leadership, the hospitals have expanded to five in Hyderabad, delivering about 10,000 babies a year.

After managing the hospitals for decades, Dr Evita decided in August 2018 to convert the private corporation into a not-for-profit Foundation. Dr Evita also set up the Fernandez School of Nursing in 2005, and in 2008 offered free education to tribal girls from across the country.

Dr Evita was selected for the ‘Pride of Telangana’ award by a jury of reputed personalities Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, I&C and IT, Dr G.V. Rao, Director, AIG Hospitals, Kamini Saraf, Lakshmi Manchu, and Manish Bhartiya, Director, Ratnadeep Retail.
