Hyderabad: Day One of the visit of a delegation comprising Congress Ministers, elected public representatives and the media to Seoul to study the Cheonggyecheon riverfront development has triggered sharp criticism from different sections.
As videos and images of Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy walking along the Cheonggyecheon surfaced on social media platforms, people questioned the significance of the study tour.
Sharing images and videos on X, Government Advisor Vem Narender Reddy said: “Visited the Waste to Energy centres, which convert waste into power and also interacted with Seoul officials about their necessity…”
Replying to his post, G Arpitha shared a copy of the news report stating that Telangana was to set up five more waste-to-energy plants to generate 101 MW of power by December 2024. She also said “Good! How is it different from what we have operational in Jawaharnagar dump yard – can you please elaborate?”
Sreekar, another X user said: “Jawaharnagar plant is three times bigger than Seoul plant. Daily it consumes 3k tonnes of waste…”
Similarly, Judson Bakka, a social worker said on X: “Musi Reddy team study tour Cheonggyecheon which is about 13 km stream and not a river feels too small… Finally its public money…”
Former State Digital Media Director Konatham Dileep said on X: “As you can see from these visuals, the Korea trip to see Cheonggyecheon rejuvenation is a waste of Telangana tax payers’ money. Cheonggyecheon is a small stream, and has no comparison with Musi River…”
He also pointed out about a Congress MLA’s comment on Musi beautification in the video: “As Malreddy Rangareddy himself admits in this video, there is no need of Musi beautification also…”
@BharathMBNR asked on X: “After having signed an agreement with a consortium with Rs.166 crore for Musi masterplan, why was the study tour to Seoul being conducted?”
“The water in Cheonggyecheon is brought from Han river, which is 15 km far. Interestingly, Revanth Reddy government wants to spend and lift Kondapochama water (85 km) that is meant for Hyderabad needs to ensure flow of water in River Musi. What is purpose of beautification at such a cost?” he asked.
