Khammam: Activists of Students Federation of India (SFI) demanded the State government establish a general university and medical university in Khammam.
It was sad that the district, in which there were more than 200 degree colleges, was deprived of a general universitiy and a medical university. As a result, around 35,000 students from the district were going to Kakatiya and Osmania Universities and those in other States for higher education, they said.
The federation activists took out a massive protest rally and laid a siege to the district collectorate here on Saturday in support of their demands. Addressing the gathering, SFI district president V Madhu, vice president Tudum Pravin wanted steps to make Khammam an educational hub.
They also demanded to release scholarships and fee reimbursement dues pending for the period 2018-20 forthwith. Every student should be given a full-scale scholarship of Rs 4, 500, besides pocket money of Rs 2,000 per month.
Setting up an IIIT institute in Khammam, running free bus services for students studying in private and government institutions, banning coaching centres and implementing Right to Education Act effectively were among their demands.
