Hyderabad: Pedestrians trying to cross the busy road at various junctions in the city can heave a sigh of relief. As many as seven Foot over Bridges (FoBs) are slated to be inaugurated this month and more are taking shape at other busy junctions in the city.

The FoBs that will be thrown open to public are located in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits in Charminar, Serilingampally, Khairatabad and Kukatpally zones. While all the FoBs have a lift, some of them will also have escalators and these pedestrian friendly facilities are coming up at strategic locations.

Meanwhile, at 10 more places, the works are underway at a brisk pace and they will be made operational by February 2022, said a GHMC official. “The initial plan was to inaugurate 17 FoBs before December this year, but due to multiple reasons there was a delay,” he said.

A visit to some of these FoBs revealed that crossing the roads during peak and non-peak hours was a major challenge for pedestrians given the high traffic volume on these stretches.

“As the vehicles move fast when there is less traffic, crossing the roads becomes difficult and dangerous even in non-peak hours. These facilities will be helpful to scores of pedestrians, especially senior citizens,” said N Sai Shravan at the FoB being built near Hyderabad Central Mall, Punjagutta.

In addition to the FoBs, the civic body is also developing traffic islands and improving several junctions. The development of 90 junctions was proposed by the GHMC and of them, 70 have already been developed while the remaining were under different stages of completion.

These pedestrian facilities besides decreasing traffic snarls will create a transit for pedestrians crossing roads. The improvement of the junction at Nanakramguda Rotary, Y Junction at Sainikpuri, Silicon T-Junction and Yousufguda are some locations where works will commence soon.
