Hyderabad: From being with women to tackle online harassers, roadside stalkers and domestic violence and also to ensure justice and legal assistance, the She Teams of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda commissionerates have successfully managed to provide a sense of security and support to women whenever they needed it.

In the year 2021, the teams helped victims of sexual harassment file 438 First Information Reports (FIR) in different law and order police stations and cybercrime police stations. The offences ranged from online stalking and harassment to physical harassment and violence.
The She Teams were launched in October 2014 by the then Hyderabad Commissioner of Police M Mahender Reddy in the city. Gradually, the concept was introduced all across Telangana with all commissionerates and districts now having teams to exclusively work for the safety and security of women. “A remarkable progress is witnessed in the functioning of the She Teams every passing year. A variety of complaints pour in to the She Teams and we deal with it in a professional way involving counselors. Wherever necessary, our personnel, along with the victim, go to the local police station and get an FIR registered and follow up the cases,” Rachakonda DCP (She Teams) SK Saleema said.

The She Teams, irrespective of commissionerates, are making all efforts to reach out to women and girls. A senior police official from Hyderabad said since the concept was introduced, a few lakhs of women were reached through direct contact programmes by the She Teams in Hyderabad. “An integral part of the She Team concept is to bring awareness about the legal rights and law of the women. Be it on streets, workplaces and even homes directly or through online modes including social media. Because of it, more women are approaching us,” she said.

In the IT corridor of Cyberabad, the She Teams regularly interact with those working in BPOs, IT companies and other offices with help of local volunteer groups. “Margadarshak programmes are organised in the IT corridor and training is being provided to volunteers to attend to the complaints of women working in IT companies,” DCP (She Teams) Cyberabad C Anasuya said. She Teams also conduct patrolling to ensure women are safer. “Decoy operations are conducted to nab those persons harassing women and the offenders are counselled,” she said.

The Teams move around public places to check for incidents of harassment of women and record the whole episode with secret cameras. The stalkers are caught by the team and brought to the police station with proper evidence of the offence. Depending on the nature and gravity, cases under appropriate sections of the law are booked against the perpetrators.
