Kothagudem: The Shyamala Gopalan Educational Foundation (SGEF) has announced the adoption of Government Junior College in Basavatarakam Gram Panchayat, Paloncha mandal, Kothagudem district.

At a programme organised by the college on Tuesday, District Intermediate Education Officer (DIEO) H Venkateswarlu and SGEF founder chairman Suresh Reddy Nalla distributed uniforms to all the students.

Venkateswarlu lauded the foundation’s commitment to transforming government education. At the request of the college principal, Suresh Reddy announced that SGEF would soon launch a mid-day meal programme for the students.

He further informed that, in collaboration with the Sonu Sood Charity Foundation, SGEF would develop the junior college into a model institution, aiming to compete with leading private colleges.

Speaking on the occasion, Suresh Reddy detailed the foundation’s involvement in various educational, welfare, and community development initiatives including scholarships and financial aid for underprivileged students pursuing higher education.

The foundation also organises career guidance and skill development workshops for rural youth, distributes educational kits, books, and stationery to government school students, and conducts health camps in rural areas offering free medical check-ups for children.

Nutrition programmes for malnourished students in remote villages and health insurance coverage for drivers to meet medical emergencies are also part of SGEF’s efforts. Additionally, the foundation is reconstructing a Kakatiya-era temple at Gudipadu in the mandal to preserve cultural heritage, Suresh Reddy explained.

Plans are underway to establish an international school in honour of Dr. Shyamala Gopalan, aimed at introducing spoken English and communication skills training for students, along with teacher training programmes.

Suresh Reddy said the life and contributions of Dr. Shyamala Gopalan inspire the foundation’s work. Students offered prayers for Dr. Shyamala Gopalan on the occasion.
