Siddipet: In a shocking incident, an inebriated lorry driver threatened to jump into an open agriculture well if the police approached him. The driver Santosh, aged around 40 years was driving his truck carrying fly ash to Hyderabad from Godavarikhani. As he was dangerously driving on Rajiv Rahadhari, a motorist called 100 to report that the truck could pose severe danger to motorists. The Siddipet police who responded to the 100 call, tried to intercept the vehicle.

After noticing the police flagging down his vehicle, Santosh stopped the vehicle on a roadside, but jumped out of the vehicle while holding a liquor bottle. He jumped into a small lake and swam across, even as the policemen watched. He reached an open well in fields and further threatened to jump into the well if police approached him.

However, Inspector Upendar’s team engaged him in casual conversation, before overpowering the driver. Santosh was found to be highly drunk as he could not even stand on his feet and speak a sentence correctly. It was only sheer luck that a responsible road user called 100 to report the dangerous driving and saved what could have been a bigger tragedy on the highway.

Santosh refused to cooperate with the police to conduct a drunk driving test, but he was forcibly shifted to a government hospital where a breathalyser test disclosed his alcohol levels to be at 471 mg.

The police officer said action would be taken against the truck owners and transport company managers even if the drivers are caught driving vehicles in drunken conditions.
